| Newspaper | 2/22/1932 | Nashville TN | 48 yrs old | The following obituary most likely appeared in the company newsletter of the Louisville and Nashville (L&N) Railroad Co.; it was written by V. D. Howard:
The untimely death of Ashley Thomas Hamilton, assistant superintendent of the Nashville Terminals, which occurred at 7:30 A.M. February 22, is deeply deplored by all who knew him.
He was born at Donelson, Tenn., near Nashville, on October 19, 1883, and educated in the public schools of Nashville and at the old Nashville Bible School. He entered railroad service at an early age under W. P. Bruce, then master of trains of the Nashville Terminals, about 1901. Shortly thereafter he went to Birmingham and was employed under L. G. Waldrop and was given charge of the night yard at Ensley, Ala., soon after obtaining promotion to the position of secretary to J. R. Wheeler, assistant superintendent at Birmingham. About 1905 he returned to Nashville to work in the local freight office, and shortly thereafter he went to New Mexico and worked for the Santa Fe and Missouri Pacific. He returned to Nashville and was employed in the Nashville Terminal in 1907 as a clerk.
During the year of 1916 and 1917 he was released for special service with the American Railway Association and Council of National Defense. After his tenure of office with the American Railway Association he returned to his former position and in March 1918 he was appointed assistant master of trains of the Nashville Terminals, and on July 1, 1918, he was appointed assistant superintendent, probably one of the youngest men ever appointed to such a responsible position.
Funeral services were held at the Vine Street Christian Church at 2:30 o'clock the afternoon of February 23, and an evidence of the esteem in which he was held by the employees, his many friends and patrons of the railroads is the fact that the capacity of the church was insufficient to hold the large number of friends who came to pay their final respects.
He is survived by his wife and three daughters, Misses Leonora and Virginia Hamilton, and Mrs. M. G. Harsh of Nashville, Tenn.; one sister, Mrs. Lee J. Watkins of Nashville; three brothers, Paul and Phillip W. Hamilton of Cristobal, Canal Zone, and Herman
