Henrietta Davis was born about 1852 somewhere in Florida and died about 1930 in an unknown place. Dates for birth and death are estimated. She lived to be about 78 years old.

She was married twice. When she was 20 years old, she married John Burke. They had at least one son who was named John Burke after his father. When she was 25, she married Isaac Samuel Ethridge (in 1878). She indicated she had given birth to 7 children by 1910, however only four were living.

It is believed she died between 1920 and 1930. Burial in the Mt. Olive Cemetery, Altha, FL with some of her children.

Family number 82 lists Samuel W. Davis (age 42), Cresy (female, age 40), Lewis (male, age 15), Georgeann (female, age 10), Henrietta (female, age 8), Sugar (female, age 5) and Honey (female, age 3 months). Samuel and Cresy say they were both born in Georgia and all of the children were born in Florida. Samuel is a farmer and estimates the value of his personal estate to be $3, 500. Cresy cannot read or write. The 1860 US Census Slave Schedule shows one black female (age 35), one mulatto female (age 12) and one mulatto male (age 6) slaves as owned by Samuel.

Recorded as family #182: Samuel Davis (age 51, born in MS), Hester (age 40, born in GA), Luis (age 21, born in FL), Henrietter (age 18, born in FL), Rosanna (age 6, born in FL), Frances (age 4, born in FL) and William (age 15, born in FL). Samuel states he is a farmer and estimates the value of his real estate to be $500 and personal property to be $1500.

Listed as dwelling #313 in the 1885 Florida Census: Issac Ethridge (age 26), Hinny (wife, age 38), John Burk (step son, age 10), Issac Ethridge (son, age 6), James Ethridge (age 4), Charly Rewen (age 3). Issac is a laborer. He was born in Florida, his father in North Carolina and his mother in Alabama. Hinney was born in Florida and both parents in GA. All of the children were born in FL. None of the children can read or write. 
Additional information about Calhoun County, FL around 1885: The principle towns in Calhoun County were Blountstown, Marysville, Chipola, Selman, Ocheesee, and Abe Springs. In 1884 railroads in Florida were bought out by one company and placed under central management. River Junction, located at the junction of the Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers, is the closest railroad and the primary hub of land transports. The photo on the right shows the iron bridge than spans the Chattahoochee River about a mile from the Depot at River Junction where wharves, storage, steamboats and hotels bussel with activity. I.S. and H.E. has been married 21 years, they have had 7 children, 4 are living. I.S. is a merchant laborer, Isaac is a farm laborer, James and Louis are also laborers.

Recorded as family #86, Henrietta Ethridge (age 58) is the head-of-household. She has been married twice (35 years in current marriage) and only 4 of her 7 children are still living. She was born in Florida, her mother in South Carolina and her father in Georgia. Lewis (son, 17 years old) and Charlie D. (son, age 13) are living with her. Both say they and their mother were born in Florida while their father was born in Georgia. Henrietta is a housekeeper, Lewis is a laborer employed as a teamster and Charlie is attending school. All three can read, write and speak English.

Listed as family #4: James M. Ethridge (head of household, age 38, widowed), Henrietta (mother, age 68, widowed) and Charley D. (brother, age 18, single). All three were born in Florida and say their parents were also born in Florida. James and Henrietta can read and write, however Charlie cannot and he has not been attending school. James is a laborer working on a general farm. The mark on the census for 'rent' or 'own' their home is different and undecipherable. It appears that they did not own or rent their home.

13 1865 May 10th -- Union troops occupy Tallahassee. While Tallahassee was the only Confederate state capital east of the Mississippi River that had not been captured, Union troops occupy the capitol following the surrender of the major Confederate armies in the east.
