John Wesley Peacock was born on December 13, 1843 in Decatur County, Georgia and died on December 31, 1925 in Blountstown, Florida. He lived to be 82 years old.

On his 1907 Civil War Pension form he states he was born December 13, 1840. He also states he is 5'6" tall with hazel eyes, light complexion and light hair. He moved from Georgia to Florida with his family when he was four months old.

He enlisted at Rico's Bluff in March of 1862 in the CSA Florida Infantry, Co. H, 5th Regiment and served as a Private. He fought in the battles of Battles of Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Antietam and Fredricksburg in 1862, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg in 1863,The FL 5th were attached to Picket's Division, and took part in the attack on the 3rd day. In 1864 he was a the battle of Cold Harbor, then he lost his little finger on his left hand in the battle of Petersburg. At the battle on the Patomac River he was shot in the foot. His company surrendered at the High Bridge, at the Appomatox River, three days before the end of the war. John was able to escape and joined up with General Lee's army at Bunker Hill where the entire army surrendered.
He return to his home and work as a Farmer and Merchant.

First marriage to Rosa/Rhoda Eleanor Parrish (see children listed below), second to Mary Charlotte Parrish (see children listed below) and third to Susannah Halley Parish Kelly born 3/10/1876 died 2/2/1937 (they had no children). His first and second wives were sisters. His third wife was a cousin and sister-in-law.

In 1884 railroads in Florida were bought out by one company and placed under central management. River Junction, located at the junction of the Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers, is the closest railroad and the primary hub of land transports. The photo on the right shows the iron bridge than spans the Chattahoochee River about a mile from the Depot at River Junction where wharves, storage, steamboats and hotels bussel with activity. John was able to escape and join up with Lee's army at Bunker Hill where the entire army surrendered. He works as a farmer. He owned 80 acres of land and 7 head of cattle, one mule and a few hogs. He has 5 daughters and 1 son and 3 stepchildren.

12 1855 Third Seminole Indian War begins and war breaks out with most of the battles occurring in Central Florida. It ends three years later when Chief Billy Bowlegs and his band are forced to move from Florida.
18 1861 No Floridian's voted for Lincoln during the 1860 election. On Jan. 10, 1861, Florida seceded from the U.S. and joined the Confederate States of America a few weeks later.
21 1864 Battle of Olustee is a Confederate victory. Union troops pull back
22 1865 Battle at Natural Bridge (Wakulla County) is a Confederate victory.
22 1865 May 10th -- Union troops occupy Tallahassee. While Tallahassee was the only Confederate state capital east of the Mississippi River that had not been captured, Union troops occupy the capitol following the surrender of the major Confederate armies in the east.
27 1870 During the 1870s, the remaining Seminole Indians begin establishing trading posts and other economy with local settlers.
39 1882 The Florida Central and Western Railroad Company was created. It combines the Florida Central, Jacksonville, Pensacola, and Mobile railroads.
40 1883 Three railroad companies are merged to form the Florida Transit and Penisular Railroad Company. Thee are: Florida Transit Railroad Co., Peninsular Railroad Co, and the Tropical Florida Railroad Co.
41 1884 Most railroads in Florida are passed into the hands of a single company owned and operated by a single management, under the name of The Florida Railway and Navigation Company. It has more that 500 miles of main track in operation and about 300 miles of track under construction. The longest route was the "Western Division" which ran from Tallahassee to Jacksonville - 209 miles.
