Emily died at her home on Stewart's Ferry Road, which is still standing, the date of 1840 on the chimney. The room on the east side of the Hamilton house was called the "Bride's Room". When the Hamilton sons married, they lived there until they established their own home. |

Their first home was said to have been on Stones River near what was then called Hamilton's Ford,… and very comfortable home -- in those early days considered to be very nice indeed. Through the years he accumulated considerable property -- land, negroes, etc. (Eleazer)He was able to give his children much better than ordinary educational advantages. He was well read and highly regarded in the district. When about 20 years of age he served under Andrew Jackson in the Creek Indian War, Battle of Horseshoe, Muckafall, Alabama, following the massacre of all the whites at Fort Mimms by the Indians. He was a Whig and was very much opposed to the South's seceding from the Union -- was a strong Unionist. However, four of his sons were in the Confederate Army. The war stripped him of much of his property, but his negroes had been kindly treated and many of them did not want to leave the old place." |
