| Russel Ralph Pealer was born about 1842 in Greenwood Township, Columbia Co., Pennsylvania and died on March 7, 1918 in Three Rivers, Michigan. Actual date of birth is unknown. He lived to be about 76 years old.
His Great-Great-Grandfather, Caleb Hopkins, on his Mother's side was a Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War. He was born and raised on a farm. In 1859 he attended the New Columbus Norman School. He would return home and teach school for the winter terms. In 1862 he was made Principal of the high school. On 9/9/1862 he enlisted in the 16 PA US Cavalry as a boy private. He was repeatedly promoted and made Sergt. Major of his regiment, later commissioned 2nd Lieut. and then 1st. Lieut. He fought in the battles of Chancellorville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor and at Petersburg. At Hatcher's Run, while in command of a squadron and leading a charge, he was wound at in the left thigh by a rifle shot. He was recommended for captain, but the end of the war stopped that promotion. He was muster out on 8/11/1865. He returned home and studied law. He was admitted to the bar on 9/3/1867. He then moved to Three Rivers, MI. A few years later he was elected and reelected Circuit Court Commissioner. He was also Prosecuting Attorney of the County. On 1/1/1882 he assumed the position of Circuit Judge and served six years. In 1888 he became a member of the Legislature and worked to pass the Soldiers' Relief Bill and others in the interest of his comrades. In 1898 at the beginning of the War with Spain. He tendered his services to the governor to group a cavalry regiment. He Said "You may command me for whatever service you may think I can best render. Whenever and wherever my country has use for me I will serve."
He married Susan F. Santee. children: Anna Geraldine (1869 -1962) Mary Ann (1871-1954)
