Born in Norway he is reported to have been a sailor for 16 years before immigrating to America. He moved to Iowa and lived most of his live in the Irwin, Iowa area.

Posted on Find-a-Grave: Jacob came from a large family in Norway. He has been a sailor for 16 years and been in most ports all over the world before immigrating to the United states around 1873. He was a farm hand in a newly formed Scottish settlement in Hilton Township, Iowa County Iowa in 1888. He fell in love with and married Elizabeth McLeod whose father was one of the original Scottish settlers. He was a farmer in Shelby County Iowa and raised several children: Louis, Merle, Ella, Florence, Delbert, Willis and Earl. Burial at Oak Hill Cemetery, Irwin, Shelby County, Iowa.
